Storm Damage

Eight Stages To Storm Readiness
  • Step 1 – Respect Mother Nature
Each year billions of dollars of damage to property is caused by severe weather. From violent thunderstorms and lightning strikes to raging hurricanes and deadly tornadoes, the first stage of preparation is understanding how powerful the forces of nature can be.
  • Step 2 – Make Wise Decisions
It is only natural to want to stay in your home during extreme weather events such as hurricanes, but before you decide which course of action to take, talk with family members and make decisions taking into consideration the following:
Is your home in a flood zone or area subject to storm surge?
Can your home endure the strong winds associated with hurricanes?
Do you have a way to keep out wind and rain?
Are medical needs of family members a concern?
In case utilities are lost have you gathered enough supplies to survive?
  • Step 3 – Plan A or Plan B?
Personal planning well in advance will help you as you decide whether to evacuate or remain in your home when a storm approaches.
Plan A – Stay at home
Shutter or cover all windows and openings.
Let relative and friends know you intend to stay.
Stock up on batteries, candles, portable radio (weather radio) and tools.
Stock up on fresh water, canned food, medications – enough for at least 2 weeks.
Secure important documents in a safe, waterproof, fireproof place.
Obtain all special equipment and fuel you may need (generator).
If flooding or storm surge are a concern do not use this plan.
    Plan B – Evacuate
Decide ahead of time whether you will go to a public shelter or leave the area.
Know the location of available shelters.
Know the route to your destination ahead of time – there may be heavy traffic.
Will all family members evacuate together or separately.
Make a survival kit that will provide for at least 3 days.
    What about your pets?
Secure important documents in a safe, waterproof, fireproof place.
Shutter or cover all windows and openings.
  • Step 4 – Protect Your Property
Trim trees – Falling trees or broken tree limbs can puncture your roof or cause other damage
Store outdoor items indoors (lawn furniture, yard equipment, barbeque grills, any loose item).
Acquire shutters or other protection to keep out rain and high winds.
Park your vehicles in a garage or carport or the leeward side of buildings away from the winds.
Install hurricane straps and connectors to roof trusses, rafters and framing.
  • Step 5 – Stock Up!
Whether you decide to stay or go you need supplies. Fuel up vehicles. Have cash on hand. Provide enough food, first aid supplies, medications for a two week period. Don't forget a deck of cards for amusement. Batteries for flashlights and portable radio. Have a photo ID which shows your home address so that you may be permitted back into your home by national guard or police.
  • Step 6 – Review Your Plan With Family
Assign tasks to each family member in the event of a storm. Dad may put up shutters, mom may gather food and supplies, kids can bring in toys and outdoor furniture or tend to pets. Make sure everyone understands their job and why it is important.
  • Step 7 – Keep An Eye On The Weather
Monitor weather programs on TV and radio. Check progress of storms frequently, they can move at an alarming rate. In the case of hurricanes you can check progress on the internet here; http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
  • Step 8 – When It's Time To Act, Get Moving!
Give yourself plenty of time to act. By following the guidelines above you will be able to make your decision quickly. Be decisive early – a head start may save you from heavy traffic or worse, finding yourself stranded.
